Shoulda been 2-0 at the halftime. Total BS on the offsides call. Scholes had 3 defenders and the figgin keeper between him and the goal and they call the offside. A joke.

Mr NJ hit it right on the head. That was one of the worst offside calls I have ever seen. It wasn't even close. A score right before halftime makes it a totally different game at 2-0. I think it's a shame that teams go out and play their guts out only to have perfectly legitimate goals disallowed because the linesmen are complete idiots and then there are spots like this one where the referee standing ten feet away from the play doesn't have the guts to overrule the call and let the goal stand.

This incompetence was highlighted during the 2002 World Cup with some of the worst officiating I have ever seen in any sporting event and it hasn't gotten much better since then.

Today was incompetence. The 2002 World Cup was just highway robbery. They wanted South Korea to advance. I have never been more angry at 7am than I was watching Italy get hosed vs S. Korea bak in '02

I always wondered why they just dont have an offsides official upstairs watching from some height so they can actually see the play.

I have never been happier! I backed Korea before the match, at half time, during the match, you just name it! I was all over them. The only negative is that thanks to that match I am still owed money. Anyhow for my secretaries in Jakarta their annual bonus was fully dependent on that World Cup. It turned out later that their bonus was even higher than their basic salary for the whole year, but still the next morning of this match one of the girls did not speak one word the whole day. Only during lunch with a very angry face she said: "That referee was very unfair!" When I asked her, if she wanted to give back the money that she had won on the match, she still could not smile. The other girl has a cousin that works for RCTI, the Indonesian channel that was broadcasting the WC and she was presenting the show around the matches. A very attractive girl, but she always talks a bit too much and has a very bad temper. After that match she threw a chair through a window and had to be taken out of the studio. I then asked them, if they were not proud of the fact that some Asian team managed to get that far, there were still no smiles.
I still do not know where I will be for the coming Euro finals, however I can tell you one thing in Europe it is usually one's own team that is mainly being watched. Here in Asia every match is important. And it will not surprise me, if again there will be a record turnover!

i was angry too with that one, as well as their game with portugal with two red cards for portugal, or was it three? But by the time they face spain i was in on the scheme was all over them like acw to not lose. The difference with the Man. U. game is that whilst korea was backed by the officiating intentionaly and blatanty with any possible means, offsides, fouls given the other way, proper goals cancelled, red cards given to opponents at will etc., in the manchester game it was just a linesman error, no intentionality there, and for the rest of the time the ref played Man. 60/40. Let's be honest here, wrong of offsides and cancelled goals are as common in soccer as proper goals, it happens everyday, off course i d irritated had i lost a bet due to a wrong call, but i am 100% sure that uefa would have much more prefered Manchester to go through, the difference in $$$ netted around the globe with a man. game or a porto one is very very big.

We got to give it to porto though, this manchester team didn't really deserve to go through, porto managed to turn a 0-1 deficit at home to a hopeful 2-1 victory, and turn a 0-1 away to a qualification 1-1, murinio by far outwitted ferguson (who has been utterly horrible this year in terms of team management and in game tactics, what was that with scholes as second attacker and jeba jeba defending midfielder?!?!?!? when you already have one of your other best defensive midfielder keane out, wouldn't saha be good enough up front and scholes in hir proper place?) When you get to lose a qualification while twice leading 1-0, when you get minutes in a row in your home turf in your own area without a half decent attack, you deserve not to go through. Besides even if the score had been 2-0, porto would have still managed to take it to overtime with the 90th minute goal.

I lost $ on the manchester United game.
That Italy game just irritated me because I root for them and the USA in World Cup...That and the fact I was up at 7am.

Fergusons sides have been questionable for a while now this season. He couldnt wait to run Beckham out of town telling him some of these Champions league games were "too big for him". Now he has guys like Fletcher and Djemba Djemba in there. Saha has been very good since he has arrived and he was on the bench most of the match.

On your comment about even if it was 2-1 it goes to extra time. True. That is huge to win that 1st leg . Knowing that you can lose the game and still hang on to play extra time. Being down 1-0 or 2-0 almost doesnt matter as long as you pull one back.

I must be the only person alive who doesn't think that Italy or Portugal were robbed by referees during the World Cup.

Spain, yes unquestionably they were robbed, but I thought Italy went out because they simply resorted to time wasting and defensive tactics when they were leading 1-0 and could easily have scored a second. I was pleased to see S.Korea come back simply due to the tactics used by Trapotoni.

Portugal lost their heads in a hostile atmosphere IMO. They seemed more interested in questioning every decision by the referee instead of simply playing the came and letting their superior technical ability win the game, although they were a bit unlucky also with some chances.

On the Man.Utd. situation it is clear that any team containing P.Neville, G.Neville, Djemba Djemba, Fletcher isn't going to get anywhere near competing in the CL.

Scholes 2nd "goal" showed the need for a TV ref IMO. The correct decision could have been made with a maximum delay of 10seconds. When such huge amounts of money are involved it can't be left to refs to get it repeatedly wrong like that and in the WC.

Italy went out due to their negative defensive attitude. They were

Fair point on Italy. They did get screwed but they did not help themselves with those tactics and left themselves in position to get screwed I guess

With you on this one for sure.

I wouldn't want tv ref's to get into the game, much like other plans for changes in soccer such as three halfs for more ad time etc., i see them as doing more harm than good, and spoiling the game. Let's face it refs decision are part of the game, their errors or bias, and for me it adds to the charm of the game, sometimes they are right, sometimes they get it wrong, but they sure give us a lot to talk about. Besides even if tv was introduced for offsides i doubt it it would help much, as in most cases things are not so clear cut and camera angles have got a lot to do with this.
